What is Covered? A day by day breakdown.

We’ve structured the workshop to build your knowledge progressively, from foundational elements to specialist inputs and practical scrutiny. Here’s a summary:

DAY ONE (8:30 to 16:00):

Kick off with the essentials.

  • Explore the foundations of building plan scrutiny, including its role in compliance, the South African Cadastral System, National Building Regulations, SANS 10400, and specialist inputs (town planners, fire, traffic, health, environmental, heritage agencies). Delve into the design process for a building, roles of SACAP-registered professionals, drawing preparation and submission per SANS 10400-A:2022.
  • Compare CAD and BIM (modelling, data, collaboration, future AI integration).
  • Cover the role of registered architectural professionals and legal considerations, including client briefing, site insights (topography, soil, views, orientation, traffic, environmental/heritage,
health/safety, town planning/zoning), zoning (A20), building lines, bulk (height, FAR), services connections, and servitudes.

Get hands-on with specialist competencies and drawings.

  • Address appointing specialists (structural/geotechnical engineers, installers, surveyors, architects, contractors, managers) via Forms 1-4 per A2(1)(g) and SANS 10400-A:2022:4.6.
  • Explore concept sketch plans, producing/discussing sketches for spaces, materials, construction, compliance, budget/programme reviews.
  • Cover drawings for submission (Form 1, plans, elevations, sections, plumbing/drainage/fire details, schedules), approval vs. contract drawings, scales (e.g., 1:100).
  • Discuss types of drawings (locality/site plans, setting-out, excavation/foundation/roof details, floor/ceiling plans, elevations, sections) and installation of services (electrical, plumbing), with scrutiny tips for layouts and structures.

Wrap up with focused scrutiny on other issues affecting plan approval.

  • Delve into town planning (SPLUMA 2013 roles: land use, development guidance, environmental protection, public health/safety, economic/social equity, participation).
  • Cover water supply/sewage (SANS 10252-1, A18, SANS 241, 10400-P/Q, 10254).
Address health/safety: ventilation (SANS 10400-O), sanitation (10400-P/Q), food areas, noise, disabled facilities (10400-S), fire safety (10400-T/V/W), diseases, overcrowding (A20/A21, 10400-C/O).
