We’ve structured the workshop to build your knowledge progressively, from foundational elements to specialist inputs and practical scrutiny. Here’s a summary:

DAY ONE (8:30 to 16:00):

Kick off with the essentials. Explore the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act, including local authority powers, plan approvals, and occupancy certificates. Explore the different parts of the National Building Regulations, together with the corresponding part of SANS 10400. Part A (general principles), Part B (structural design), Part C (dimensions), Part D (public safety), and Part E (demolition work).

Learn about design life, preventative maintenance, minimum floor areas, ramps, swimming pools, and more.

Get hands-on with site and structural elements. Cover Part F (site operations like public protection and stormwater disposal), Part G (excavations), Part H
(foundations, including site classification and foundation types), Part J (floors), Part K (walls, from stability to rain penetration), and Part L (roofs, including fire resistance and anchoring trusses).

Wrap up with critical systems and safety. Tackle Part M (stairways), Part N (glazing), Part O (lighting and ventilation), Part P (drainage, including septic tanks), Part Q (non-waterborne sanitary disposal), Part R (stormwater), Part S (facilities for persons with disabilities), Part T (fire protection), Part U (refuse disposal), Part V (space heating), Part W (fire installations), and Part XA (energy usage, with new zones and insulation standards).

Meet Your Expert Facilitator: John Graham

Leading the way is John Graham, a true pioneer in South Africa’s building inspection industry. As executive director of SAHITA, NABISA, and HouseCheck, John brings decades of hands-on experience.

He’s a former NHBRC-registered builder, author of the textbook “Mastering Building Inspection in South Africa” (edited by Prof Jeffrey Mahachi). John was a member of the task team of subject matter experts which developed the curriculum for national Building Inspector Qualification (coming soon).

John has led a team of facilitators who have presented these workshops for many years for ECSA and SAAMA CPD points to departments like Public Works, Human Settlements, numerous municipalities, and the private sector.

A team of experienced facilitators are contracted by SAHITA to present the same material, developed by John Graham.
